Dave Drinks Beer

I review the beers I drink

Surly – Darkness

Ok, first off, the wax on this bottle is a pain in the ass, I had to work WAY too hard to open this. Anyway, this beer lives up to its name, as the flashlight shows virtually no light. Head retention is excellent and the smell is warm and boozy with hints of raisin and chocolate. Taste is fairly sweet, with a strong kick of booze and a subtle smokiness beneath it all, and the mouthfeel is extremely smooth and creamy with a thin carbonation. The beer ends with a moderately bitter herbal hop and residually sweet finish with notes of dark chocolate and booze. Overall, a lot sweeter than anticipated, and the alcohol is very forward in the flavor, but still, I like it. It’d make a great after dinner/dessert beer.
