Dave Drinks Beer

I review the beers I drink

Northway Brewing – Barrel-Aged Barley Wine

Moderately hazy and murky with no head retention, smells of raisin, fig, oak, and booze. The taste is crisp and lightly sweet, with flavors of caramel, raisins, ginger, maple, and a mildly nutty yeast character on a slick medium body. The finish is long and moderately low in bitterness, featuring notes of toasted caramel, vanilla, oak, raisins, bourbon, and booze. Overall, it’s a little rough around the edges, I’ll have to pick up another bottle and age it for a few years to see if it mellows out. Nevertheless, it’s a very bold and complex beer, definitely a slow sipper, but a beer that rewards you for taking your time.
