I review the beers I drink

New Belgium – Cellar Blender

So, for some reason NB has virtually no information on this beer on their site, so all I know is that it’s only available in the “Blend Like a Brewer” pack, and what’s on the label:

This dark ale is fermented with various fruits, then blended with wood-aged sour beer for complex notes of sour cherries and a medium body. Enjoy on its own or blended with the recipes suggested by our brewers.

Anyway, this beer is clear with a deep ruby shade under direct light, minimal head retention. Smells of sour cherries, with cranberry and raspberries to a lesser degree. The taste is tart and malty at the same time, sour enough to cause my mouth to pucker, but with a crisp, full body underneath to carry along the flavor development and not linger on the sour too long, and the alcohol is hidden expertly. The finish is dry and mineral from the carbonation, no hops or bitterness really to be found, just an astringency that causes the mouth to salivate after the beer leaves the tongue. Overall, a very interesting beer, never had anything quite like it, maybe a Dogfish Head SeaQuench, but with darker malts and fruits. Excited to see how this blends with the other beers.
