Flashlight does not show through, no head retention, smells of maple, bourbon, and chocolate. The taste is rich and earthy with flavors of milk chocolate, maple syrup, caramel, cola, raisin, and cherry on a syrupy smooth extra full body. The finish is long and moderately high in bitterness, featuring notes of dark chocolate, bourbon, oak, maple, vanilla, black coffee, smoke, herbal hops, and a lingering warmth on the throat and palate. Overall, this is a really cool beer and expertly crafted. I’m surprised how sweet it is and by the maple notes throughout, but the oak and bourbon you’d expect are there in full. I’ll admit I’ve never had Heaven Hill bourbon, but the whiskey notes in this beer are definitely heavenly.
