A Sicilian red blend of two new-to-me grape varietals: Frappato and Nerello Mascalese. Smells of plum, red currants, and seasoned leather. The taste is rich and layered with flavors of plum, zucchini bread, cherry stems, and red meat on an astringent, full body. The finish is long and dry, featuring notes of grape leaves, forest floor, dark chocolate, and cherry. Overall, it’s not as bright and vibrant as I had expected given the other Sicilian wines I’ve had, but instead a HUGE wine with lots of structure and complexity, worthy of aging and comparable to the great Sangiovese and Nebbiolo wines of the North. Not bad at all for $14!
