I’ve had quite a few gins over the years and consider myself a big fan of it, yet I’ve never had a Jenever, the original Dutch version. Tasted a bit straight and it’s quite malty and reminds me of a juniper whisky.
Smells of juniper, citrus, and alcohol. The taste is crisp and lightly sweet with flavors of lemon, lime, juniper, and Sprite. The finish is long and low in bitterness, featuring notes of quinine, lemon and lime peels, pine, and herbs. Overall it’s very interesting, less juniper forward than most modern London Dry gins, perhaps a bit sweeter as well. I’ll have to try another G&T without the citrus garnish as well as a couple other classic cocktails:
A G&T without garnish is perhaps a bit sweeter and still has a hint of lemon zest; though with garnish was better.
A gimlet is remarkably smooth and tastes more or less like a daquiri with a hint of juniper.
A dry martini is lightly sweet and citrusy with a mellow juniper finish.
A negroni is extraordinarily smooth and rich, and very well balanced between sweet and bitter.
A Collins tastes mostly just like lemonade, with not much of the Genever coming through.
