An intriguing concept, I do not believe I have ever had a barrel aged IPA. Extremely hazy, almost orange in bright light, and with decent head retention. Smells of hops, predominantly pine and citrus, bit of lemongrass, with subtle hints of wood and alcohol. Taste is crisp, and citrusy, with a very early hop kick, medium body. The finish is more of a continuation of the hop flavors as they develop into a moderately high bitterness, and are then joined by notes of oak and vanilla from the wood that adds an incredible level of complexity. Overall, this is a very cool beer, the hops have that aged, resinous character of say, DFH 90 Minute, but with an added dimension of fresh juicy citrus that reminds me of a NE style IPA. Doom manages to blend these two styles of IPA, and then add extra layers of subtle flavors through the barrel aging. A must-try beer.
