I review the beers I drink

Sam Adams – Nitro Coffee Stout

Been wanting to try this for awhile, grabbed it half-off at work. Flashlight shows deep ruby and amber tones, head retention is excellent. Smells like a creamy, dark roasted cappuccino, but somewhat faint in the overall aroma. Taste is a milky sweet, creamy, but thin bodied cold coffee. The mouthfeel is silky smooth and the lacing is fantastic, but there’s no effervescence to the beer at all. The hop character is just as thin as the rest of the beer, the finish is just more dark coffee and milk. The lack of body in the mouthfeel and the chemical effects of carbon dioxide on the tongue really affect the experience here, it’s like drink a soda only to find out it’s flat. But instead of a beer, you have a cold cappuccino with some alcohol in it. The flavors are nice, but it’s just missing key components of what most people consider a beer. Because of this, breweries that make nitro beers usually use “beer gas” a 25/75% mix of carbon dioxide and nitrogen; Sam apparently missed the memo.
