Monk’s Cafe Grand Cru is a blend of 3 yr old aged and freshly brewed triple ales. This blend is then aged for 6 months in Oak casks. It is here that Monk’s Cafe Grand Cru acquires its unique sour profile.
Just before bottling, a high fermented lager is blended in to reach an approachable ABV of 5.5%.
Lightly hazy and reddish brown in color with minimal head retention, smells of vinegar and roasted malts. The taste is tart and fruity with flavors of raspberry, sour cherry, toasted biscuits, and honey on a full body. The finish is long and moderately low in acidity and with no real bitterness, featuring notes of banana, rhubarb, fig, and raisin. Overall it’s a very unique style, but this example is very well made and strikes the perfect balance between malty and tart.
