I review the beers I drink

La Colombina – Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2018

The undisputed king of traditional Tuscan reds, essentially a Rosso di Montalcino with an extended maceration period and longer aging.

A lightly brownish red hue, smells of oak, sherry, and vanilla. The taste is bright and jammy with flavors of strawberry rhubarb jam, blueberry pie, elderberry, blackberry, and plum on a lightly astringent medium body. The finish is long and dry with a moderately low acidity and a gentle alcoholic warmth, featuring notes of lychee, lingonsylt, soft oak, and aromatic tobacco. Overall, this is a wonderfully structured wine, seemingly simple at first taste, but slowly evolving across the palate with time and more sips. The most vanilla forward wine I have had to date, and one of the more expensive at $55, not an everyday wine but certainly worth the price for a special occasion or to cellar for several years.
