“In 2014, a new category of Chianti Classico was introduced: Chianti Classico Gran Selezione. Gran Selezione is made exclusively from a winery’s own grapes grown according to stricter regulations compared to regular Chianti Classico. Gran Selezione is granted to a Chianti Classico after it passes a suitability test conducted by authorised laboratories, and after it is approved by a special tasting committee.” Wikipedia
Smells of lush blackberry, plum, and cherry. The taste is vibrant and fruity with flavors of blackberry, cherry, plum, and strawberry on a lightly astringent full body. The finish is long and dry with a moderately low acidity, featuring notes of raspberry fruit leather, oak, forest floor, and bitter English hops. Overall this is a very good wine, both brighter and smoother than the Riserva. Whether it’s worth double the price at $40/bottle is up to you, but it is an objectively better wine, and my favorite of all the Chiantis I’ve tried.
