Bell’s – Citrus Oberon

Many years ago I reviewed the original Oberon and found it to be enjoyable, though it wasn’t compelling enough to seek out again. I found a 12 pack of flavored Oberons though and it piqued my interest enough to take a chance.

Moderately hazy with light head retention, smells of bread dough, lemon, and orange blossom. The taste is crisp and fruity with flavors of buttered biscuits, banana bread, and just a hint of orange; body is full and silky smooth. The finish is long and moderately low in bitterness, featuring notes of Belgian yeast, clove, lightly toasted oak, and soft herbal hops. Overall, it’s not bad, the overall experience is very reminiscent of a Blue Moon with a slice of orange dropped in. Perhaps more enjoyable than the original, but if I wanted a citrusy wheat beer, I’d probably grab a Summer Shandy.
