I review the beers I drink

Northway Brewing – Barrel-Aged Belgian Sextuple

Flashlight shows a bright, lightly hazy blood orange colored glow, generates a vigorous yet quickly dissipating head while pouring, smells of caramel, oak, and booze. The taste is unbelievably smooth for a beer this strong, and lightly tart with flavors of caramel, toffee, oaked chardonnay, raisins, figs, sour cherry, amaretto, and a hint of funky Belgian yeast on a slick medium body. The finish is long and moderately low in bitterness, featuring notes of charred oak, bourbon, vanilla, salted caramel, herbal hops, and subtle cherry ending in a pleasant mild warmth on the palate. Overall, this beer is kinda ridiculous on paper; I think one time back in college I had an 18% stout and it was pretty hard to finish an entire bottle. This is the strongest beer I have ever had and yet is smoother than most beers over 10%. The bourbon barrel flavor is very prominent here, but the complex Belgian flavors can be found in the background, filling in and round out the flavor profile. I would 100% drink this beer again; I might have to pick up another bottle for aging…
